Can Grazing Moderate Climatic Effects on Herbage Nutritional Quality?

چکیده

In Mediterranean grasslands, the composition of vegetation and its nutritional quality for animals are strongly affected by climatic conditions prevailing during winter spring. Therefore, these seasonal ecosystems provide an opportunity to examine how variability in affects regeneration pasture vegetation. The intensity grazing this system can moderate, or alternatively exacerbate, effects on Herein, we analyzed interactive climate variables, intensity, exclusion herbage parameters using long-term data collected 2005–2018 from extensive experiment Galilee, Israel. We evaluated contribution different variables prediction parameters. Our results showed that have a dramatic effect interacts with intensity. Herbage improved temperate rainy years compared warm dry years. High under conditions, but was moderated completely disappeared as become warmer drier. study foresee negative warming drying carrying capacity natural pastures.

Effects of herbage mass and herbage quality on spatially heterogeneous grazing by cattle in a bahia grass ( Paspalum notatum ) pasture

Small-scale patches (locations of 50 cm × 50 cm at a feeding station level) in a bahia grass ( Paspalum notatum ) pasture under cattle grazing were investigated in terms of herbage mass, quality and utilisation during a grazing season (May–November), to characterise the quantityquality relationship of patches and relate this to spatially heterogeneous grazing by animals. Nitrogen concentration ...

Effects of cattle grazing on herbage quality in a herbaceous Mediterranean rangeland

The main objective of this study was to determine to what extent grazing pressure and timing modulate the seasonal progression of herbage quality in hilly Mediterranean grassland systems. The study was conducted during six consecutive years between 2003 and 2008 at the Karei Deshe experimental farm, in eastern Galilee, Israel, dominated by rich hemicryptophytic grassland. Treatments included tw...

Technical Note: Effects of tethering on herbage selection, intake and digestibility, grazing behavior, and energy expenditure by Boer x Spanish goats grazing high-quality herbage.

Twenty-four yearling Boer x Spanish goats were used in a crossover experiment to determine the effects of tethering on herbage selection, intake and digestibility, grazing behavior, and energy expenditure (EE) with high-quality herbage. Four 0.72-ha paddocks of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrium) were grazed in the spring. Each paddock hosted 6 animals, 3 with f...

Cultivar Effects of Perennial Ryegrass on Herbage Intake by Grazing Dairy Cows

Perennial ryegrass is the most abundant grass species in temperate climates. An increased herbage intake of dairy cows by breeding new cultivars could have a large potential impact on agriculture. The effects of cultivars on sward structure, nutritive value, physical characteristics and disease resistance of perennial ryegrass are discussed. Cultivar differences were found in several studies fo...

Combined Effects of Extreme Climatic Events and Elevation on Nutritional Quality and Herbivory of Alpine Plants

Climatic extreme events can cause the shift or disruption of plant-insect interactions due to altered plant quality, e.g. leaf carbon to nitrogen ratios, and phenology. However, the response of plant-herbivore interactions to extreme events and climatic gradients has been rarely studied, although climatic extremes will increase in frequency and intensity in the future and insect herbivores repr...
